Class Description

Master classes offer a unique opportunity for experienced students to learn from esteemed performers and theater educators. CYT Tucson is proud to host Yale alumna Nikki Martinez's master class: Empathy, Investigation, Bravery, and Play

In this four-part acting intensive, students will deeply explore the cornerstones of performance: understanding character, text analysis, the actors' instrument, and sense of play.
Week 1: Community, ensemble, and the empathetic worldview.
  • In order to understand a character, actors must first be willing to investigate and question each other and themselves with kindness and compassion. This course will give students the tools to approach characters from this place of understanding.
Week 2: Understanding text: Objective, Obstacle, and Tactic.
  • Creating interesting drama begins with an analysis of three basic character questions:  What do I want? (need)  What am I doing to get what I want? (action) and what’s stopping me from getting what I want? (conflict). Students will learn how to ask these questions of their characters in order to convincingly portray their internal conflicts.
Week 3: The Actors' Instrument: The voice and body as tools for cultivating drama.
  • This week focuses on exercises to better understand, activate and articulate the actors' ability to express emotion.  In the theatrical context, students have to think outside the pedestrian standard in order to make choices that are big, bold and dramatic.
Week 4: Commitment, Bravery, and PLAY!
  • The intensive culminates with opportunities and strategies to perform as informed, engaged and committed actors who are willing to be courageous in their choices and able to approach the work with an attitude of delight and fun!
Prerequisite: All students will receive a link to submit a headshot and resumé on enrollment. *Students under age 13 may request approval via email to to join this class if they have participated in a minimum of three productions (CYT, school, community, church, etc.).
